The Water Stewardship Service Line exists to empower clients to address shared water challenges by developing water stewardship strategies that prioritize action in water-stressed basins and build water-resilient value chains. The EMEA Water Stewardship Service Line Leader will lead Anthesis’ EMEA region for Water Stewardship services including setting go-to-market strategies, having accountability for commercial performance, and team recruitment and development.
They will have an outstanding track record of helping companies develop effective strategies to advance net-positive water stewardship goals as well as measuring and managing water-related risks and opportunities, transparently reporting on progress, and developing and implementing solutions to contribute to proactive restoration of watersheds.
As a key leader in expanding our Nature Business Line, the Service Line leader will be responsible for supporting clients in developing and implementing context-based water targets, promoting uptake of tools and technologies to steward freshwater, and measure impacts on critical natural resource concerns within watersheds with regard to shared water challenges such as water quantity and water quality.
Our ideal candidate will be someone with a robust understanding of developing and implementing water stewardship strategies across an enterprise, inclusive of the full cradle to grave value chain. They will possess a proven track record of experience in tackling sector specific water challenges and experience in implementing solutions to restore watershed health and advance corporate water stewardship. You will be expected to keep abreast of solutions for identifying and reducing critical water risks to clients’ businesses, seize water-related opportunities, and contribute to water security and the Sustainable Development Goals. This role will also require a keen knowledge of emerging regulatory and technology developments and ability to implement strategic and tactical initiatives in response to emerging opportunities. An understanding and experience of effective project management is essential.
The EMEA Water Stewardship Service Line lead will work closely with a team of technical water experts as well as colleagues across Anthesis to deliver subject matter expertise on solutions to drive transformative water stewardship, integrate water management as part of nature positive and net zero and provide innovative systemic water solutions.
The role holder is also accountable for the development and implementation of new and innovative water stewardship related services, tools, methodologies and digital solutions in close collaboration with the global and other regional and country Water Stewardship Service Lines leaders, and will play an important oversight role to ensure that the water stewardship offering is taken to market in a consistent manner across the regions, with appropriate quality assurance as befits a top tier professional services firm.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and drive the EMEA Service Line strategy, go to market and business plan in close collaboration with the Global Water Service Line Lead, Global and Regional Nature Solutions Business Line Leaders and Global Lead for Growth for Nature
- Provide clear leadership and direction to your team members on all aspects of our work related to this role, including (but not limited to) business development, technical subject matter expertise, project delivery, quality assurance and client management.
- Manage Service Line resources with particular attention to recruitment and retention to maximize opportunity, project delivery and profitability.
- Perform line management responsibilities for direct reports, including conducting performance reviews and goal setting, and providing mentorship and guidance on career path development.
- Provide supervision, guidance, and technical leadership to clients as well as colleagues on leading practices, standards, and trends, incorporating this knowledge into consulting projects, proposals and the evolution of new services.
- Supervise large, complex, and dynamic consulting projects throughout their entire project cycle: initiation, planning, design, execution, monitoring, quality assurance and closure.
- Manage key client relationships and projects, developing and deploying Water Stewardship strategies to help clients realize business value and impact.
- Lead business development activities related to water scarcity, quality, and other challenges, including sales calls, actively engaging with new and existing clients to establish and/or grow the relationships in accordance with our client management approach, and developing and/or stewarding proposals and marketing materials.
- Define leading offerings to take to the market, including developing supporting materials, e.g. sales materials, proposals, budgets, and deliverable templates, etc. as well as monitoring market developments to evolve the current offerings, tools and approaches to meet and exceed client needs.
- Work with the EMEA Nature Solutions Business Line Leadership to manage the Service Line’s financial and operational activities, working closely with the operational support and other internal support resources.
- Work collaboratively with co-reports to enable and support the development of Anthesis’ thought leadership, services, products, marketing materials and offerings in relation to water stewardship and other ESG-linked standards and frameworks insofar as they are related to water stewardship.
- Hold responsibility for all aspects of quality assurance for the Water Service Line’s offerings.
- Recruit, develop/mentor, retain and manage talent, to achieve performance excellence, within the Water Service Line, and under the guidance of operational support for the EMEA Nature Solutions Business Line Lead.
- Ensure integration of Water Stewardship-related services with other Nature and ESG Solutions which form part of the wider client journey.
- Establish close ties and work collaboratively with other Water Service Line Leaders globally to share best practices and key learnings and strive for continuous improvement of the service line and offerings.

Knowledge, Education & Desired Qualifications:
- 10+ years’ practical experience with corporate water stewardship.
- Degree, ideally at a Master’s level or higher, in environmental sciences, sustainability, supply chain, business, project management, conservation and/or comparable relevant experience.
- Private sector experience desirable.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Science-Based Target Network’s freshwater methodology and experience with value chain water accounting (quantity and quality) and blue/green/grey water footprinting aligned with ISO 14046, WFN’s Water Footprint Assessment Manual, and the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Standard.
- Demonstrable experience in any or several of the following areas: water risk assessments, goal/target setting, developing and implementing water stewardship strategy, water quality monitoring, environmental impact assessments, nature-related reporting, regulatory compliance, financial modelling, corporate risk management and organizational behaviour.
- Experience creating and implementing business models and processes that integrate sustainability & risk principles into business value proposition.
