We have a small number of positions available on our Short Online Pre-sessional Course.
Details:
24th June – 26th July; compulsory teacher induction 17th – 19st June.
A further retake week takes place 29th July – 2nd August with optional invigilating and marking available for teachers. Participation will be offered during the course.
Main Duties
• Online teaching of English for Academic Purposes as part of a collegiate course team. This includes: lesson preparation and delivery via Zoom; use of Canvas VLE; providing targeted and constructive student feedback; online invigilating and marking; pastoral and academic tutorial support; and upholding the standards of our pre-sessional courses
• Participation in the teacher induction programme, staff meetings and other events as required
• Accurate and timely record keeping
Essential Teaching Skills and Abilities:
• Excellent teaching skills including an excellent ability to adapt to the needs of students within the course parameters, and to engage students in order to deepen learning
• A CELTA (or equivalent with substantial TEFL component)
• A minimum of 2 years recent English language teaching experience- preferably some in English for Academic Purposes
• A can-do attitude and ability to cheerfully adapt to the requirements of our course
• The ability to work collaboratively and independently to achieve course aims
• The ability to consistently produce high quality work within tight deadlines
• The ability to maintain high professional standards and a positive outlook throughout the course
• Experience of teaching multilingual classes and classes with a strong monolingual majority
• Awareness of current UK Higher Education teaching and learning conventions
• Knowledge of the academic and pastoral needs of international students on a pre-sessional course
Essential Technical Requirements:
• A good level of IT literacy: working knowledge of video conferencing programs in general (Zoom and Teams specifically) for teaching; routine use of standard educational technology: word processing, spreadsheets, email, VLE (Canvas) etc. for materials adaptation, online learning and routine record keeping tasks.
• Technical capability for online teaching: working equipment and reliable internet (Zoom requires internet bandwidth of up to 3 Mbps). A reliable and sufficiently fast machine to work on with plenty of free space. A working camera, headset and microphone to conduct lessons online.
• A second monitor set up for assessment invigilation.
Desirable
• Recent experience of teaching online
• Recent experience of teaching EAP to groups of students from mixed disciplines.
• Recent experience of teaching on UK higher education pre-sessional courses
• DELTA (or equivalent with substantial TEFL component)
• master’s degree in Applied Linguistics or related subject (preferred); or in any other subject
• Experience of undergraduate art and design students (for some positions)
• Experience of Zoom, Canvas, Microsoft OneNote, SharePoint is useful.
Job Salary & Benefits
Pre-Sessional EAP tutors are employed as Hourly Paid Lecturers.
Weekly schedules vary but the following demonstrates the total for the entire course.
Hours are made up of:
Fixed hours: Teaching, meetings, induction and training etc. This is the same for all teachers.
Variable hours: these are hours in addition to fixed hours comprising of weekly tutorials and marking which is costed per student in a class. Class sizes range from 8 –16 students where possible.
Short Course Hours Demonstration
Total fixed hours: 151 (guaranteed for all teachers)
Total average variable hours: 64 (based on a class of 12 students)
Total average hours combined: 215 (based on a class of 12 students)
Approximate weekly workload: 35 hours over 5 teaching weeks (based on a class of 12 students) and a compulsory 3-day induction.
University Halls of Residence accommodation is not offered as the course is online.
